It takes a while to install because the sample library is huge, and the drums truly are deeply sampled. The Metal Foundry SDX is an expansion library for Toontrack Superior Drummer 2. If you need to hear some of the samples just check on the website to hear how great the drums are. This is by far the best metal drum kit you will find online or in a store. If you need metal or rock drums this is the pack to get. There is nothing that you do not get with this pack. It comes with your complete drum sounds from kicks and snares to toms and cymbals/hats. I really like all of the grooves are very good and the fills too, you can play around and switch the drums up to give it a different feel. But it was well worth the wait because now we have every single drum sound that we need to have for our style of music. Installing the Foundry SDX was not that quick though for some reason all of these drum samples take a long time to load into the computer.

After hearing some of the snares like the Tomas Haake Engineering 7x13 snare and the Pearl Free Floating 5x14 there was no question we were going to spend the money and get this pack right away. All of the samples are really good though those were just the ones we had the chance to try out before we made the purchase.

Some of the kicks that made us want this pack so bad were the Ludwig Amber Vistalite and the DW Collectors Series kicks. We had a chance to check out some of the sounds that come with this pack before purchasing it. We heard about The Metal Foundry after spending hours online researching for metal packs. We have been through a lot of different expansion packs but none of them had that metal feel. Its a personal choice but i've not heard many people say anything but good things about Decades and LOR whereas quite a few people seem to have not been satisfied with D&D and to a lesser extent Hansa and have gone on to sell them.ĭ&D is a harder sell now that LOR exists unless you particularly want modern metal drums, it does have a great selection of cymbals though. The Metal Foundry SDX is made by Toontrack and it is the metal expansion pack that our group was looking for. changes to presets needed to enjoy the sounds are minimal or non existent. When i sit down to practice my default kits are the Pearl Rock kit from Decades or a Sparkle variant in LOR. One thing LOR and Decades both have is great out of the box preset sounds. I think Legacy of Rock is overall the best expansion ( and if i could only have one expansion then it would definitely be this one ) but i love 70's and 80's hard Rock and Progressive though the total selection of kits covers also a lot of other styles. Hansa has lovely rooms and interesting extra instruments but i personally don't like many of the sounds as much as those on Decades or LOR. ĭ&D has a lot of content but you are going to have to learn quite a bit in order to sculpt those sounds into something that will suit anything other than metal drumming. After securing those two i don't think i would have bought D&D or Rooms of Hansa. If i was to wind back a year i would have probably bought Decades first and second purchase would have been LOR. I'm just interested in getting good sounds out of an e kit with the minimum of fuss. I bought SD3 last year: i have D&D, Hansa, Decades and Legacy of Rock. i have decades which is great (and a couple of the older SDXs) but I'd love to get all those newer SDXs you mention, even D&D (for my kids ) Specifically, i would think D&D would only be a sensible choice if you are a dedicated heavy drummer - the other three will give you variety in the styles you mention but different flavours of variety. The instrument lists and sound samples on toontrack's site, and the various reviews and demos on YouTube, are really good resources for making a choice but cymbals and snares that line up with my preferences and give the right kind of variety in instrumentation are what's most important to me snares off, brushes, etc).ĭon't get me wrong, it's all important and decades vs hansa vs LoR give you very different choices. The main thing i look at personally in the SDXs are (1) cymbals, and (2) snares, including what articulations/voices you get on the snares (e.g. This doesn't really answer your question, but my thoughts are that you can do a lot with drum sounds in processing etc.
